Article : Labour Of Love

Photography Paul Yeo Text Ninart Lui

Visitors to this tranquil abode with a resort feel immediately get a sense of who’s boss – the couple’s one-year old princess Acacia. While the house itself, set deep within the newly hip estate of Sengkang, manages to effortlessly combine simplistic modern living with colorful, quirky furnishings showcasing the Mackenzies’ vibrant personalities, the room that immediately prompted interior designer Chrys Chua to enthusiastically gush about every little nook and cranny must undoubtedly be the piece dé resistance – the nursery.

“We spent the most time conceptualizing the nursery”, admitted Chrys laughingly. Yet, what a pay-off: The meticulously matched custom-made cupboard handles with a Laura-Ashleyesque floral motif highly complemented the custom-made solid wood cupboard doors that were painted in white to fit in with the general theme of the house.

Every single detail in the nursery is truly a painstaking labour of love,
and the homeowners as well as Chrys are extremely pleased with the results of their efforts.

The whitewashed theme of the nursery runs through all the main rooms of the house – all the better to contrast some of the starkly dramatic furnishings that the couple displays proudly in the living room itself, which flows over into an open-concept dining area. Some of the more interesting furnishings on display in the main area of the house include an antique dining table converted from an old Rajastan door as well as a mahogany daybed – but make no mistake about these being showroom pieces, the McKenzies utilize them daily.

Flexible lighting around the living room area was designed to give the McKenzies many lighting options while watching TV, which is crucial since they are serious about their entertainment – there’s even a projection screen that can be pulled down over the flat screen LCD television set.

Though the daybed might seem tempting enough for a recline, the couple’s own bed is infinitely more inviting - as evidenced by two feline friends that seem to be majestically perched permanently on top of the billowing white covers in the master bedroom.

Again, with white as the predominant theme, Chrys and the McKenzies have created a pristine sanctuary of modern contemporary living. In the interests of maximizing space, Chrys decided to do away with clunky wardrobes and instead opt for a streamlined walk-in closet behind a mirrored sliding door.
The adjourning toilet is certainly a sight for sore eyes – attention to precision is well showcased, with fully customized bathroom counter and sleek fittings as well as a polished mirror fringed with fluorescent light.

The pristine canvasses of white contrasts nicely with the McKenzies’ paintings and furnishings, each with their own fascinating story behind it if you’d care to take a moment to listen. Together, they give off that sort of relaxed, resort-ish feel that makes the house resemble the very best of boutique hotels – those that make it seem like you’ve never been away. In fact, it almost feels just like home.
